Finally Feeling Festive with Lala+j!

Finally Feeling Festive with Lala+j!

Sooo it’s not beginning to look AT ALL like Christmas here in Marin. As usual. And I was about to plunge into my usual rant about feeling unfestive at this time of year when I received some exciting news concerning what really lies at the heart of Christmas for all of us – the opportunity to shop shop shop!!! Our kids spent a lot of time this summer romping around in gorgeous baby rompers from our all time favorite online…

Apple picking in Petaluma

Apple picking in Petaluma

It’s Fall! And I’m ignoring the fact, as I do every year, that we’re heading into the hottest part of the Bay Area summer and instead joining in with the rest of the northern hemisphere in celebrating all the cheesy festivities of Autumn. Without a doubt my favourite time of year. (Not to mention the run up to Christmas – yay, ok deep breaths….). We may not be able to cosy up in woolly things quite yet, but this part…

Does living in the sunshine really make us happier?

Does living in the sunshine really make us happier?

Off the back of a long Labour Day weekend of miserable heatwave (102 degrees inside the house is not my idea of fun right now!) I’m asking myself this question again… And, although I’ve always professed to be an ‘all four seasons’ kinda gal, I have to admit that ~ while there are things I miss about England ~ living in the sunshine really does seem to make a difference to our quality of life. We live outdoors more. Our…

Our So Cal Summer

Our So Cal Summer

Like many other ex pats we spend most of our summers packing for the rain, flying to Heathrow and visiting friends and family in the motherland for our summer vacation. While these trips are important to us it’s increasingly becoming a lot of work to take those long haul flights and stay in multiple locations every summer. So this year, with two toddlers in tow, we vowed to take it easy.  Pre-babies we’ve done four or five trips down to…

Does Having Babies When We’re Old Keep Us Young??

Does Having Babies When We’re Old Keep Us Young??

Last night was a big night for me, the penultimate night of my 30’s!  How did I mark the last few days of my middle-youth?  I left Big M to put the kids to bed while I had a pedi with a friend. In the mall. It was a crazy night. We even headed out early to have a mooch around H&M (kids section) before our appointment. I know I need to get out more. I know I should have…

Palm Springs

Palm Springs

So on the eve of the election we packed our bags made a run for it. Not, as you might expect, to the border. But instead to my happy place in the desert – Palm Springs.  It had never really occurred to me that Palmy might be an ideal destination for kids but it was awesome!  Chilled house, turquoise pool, silent starry nights and just enough easy-access walking tours and museums to keep our two maniacs sedated for five days….

A Beach Day with Mummy

A Beach Day with Mummy

We’re lucky enough to have three or four great beaches nearby us here in Marin, but I sometimes holding back from visiting the wilder beaches during the week when I’m solo parenting due to fear of losing a babe or two to steep dunes, surf sized waves, rip tides. (Or simply having to lug a 40lb toddler across soft sand.) We have a lovely ‘baby beach’ at the end of our street which is a mecca for toddlers, paddle board…

Magical Muir Beach and Slide Ranch.

Magical Muir Beach and Slide Ranch.

Our favourite weekend activity is kicking around the wild and beautiful beaches of the Marin Headlands with the kids in tow. When we had just one, easily packaged, baby boy we would hike around with him in the baby backpack.  At nearly three he is of course determined to be ‘out!’ of any travel contraption, plus we now have another small human to cart around with us.  So we’ve had to think of new ways to enjoy the coast that…

Our 4th

Our 4th

Anyone who knows me knows that I am big on festivities. Birthdays, Christmas, Fridays… anything that can be dressed up and given a theme, I’m on it with bells on.  As I’ve mentioned before here, it’s one of the things I love about living in the US, where every change of season is ‘a thing’ that deserves its own Williams-Sonoma table centrepiece.  So, as you can imagine, I have jumped all over this 4th July situation; a day with its…

The day the music died.

The day the music died.

On Monday night my iphone died.  We had been driving back from Sonoma 4th July celebrations and our eight month old had definitely been gumming it at some point on the way home. When I plugged it in at the end of the day a cryptic little message popped up telling me that the cable was not compatible with this phone.  It had been a long day – it’s tired and confused poor thing, I thought.  It will feel better…
