Anyone who knows me knows that I am big on festivities. Birthdays, Christmas, Fridays… anything that can be dressed up and given a theme, I’m on it with bells on. As I’ve mentioned before here, it’s one of the things I love about living in the US, where every change of season is ‘a thing’ that deserves its own Williams-Sonoma table centrepiece. So, as you can imagine, I have jumped all over this 4th July situation; a day with its own classicly simple message, pagentry and colour scheme!
In past years we’ve held ex-pat Tea Party themed BBQs or planned family excursions to Yosemite or Big Sur. But this year, with an eight month old in tow, we kept it simple and headed to the lovely old square at the heart of Sonoma town plaza for their “Old fashioned Style parade and fair”. It really is fantastic. A brilliant mix of cheap and simple family fun with perfect adult boozing options and all within stylish compounds of Sonoma town – shopping, check – stylish restaurants, check. – beautiful hotels, check.
We stayed and lunched at the El Dorado on the corner of the old square. We’ve stayed here before without kids, but this time I was blown away by how accomodating and caring they were for the kids, on a day when they were booked out from dawn til dusk.
While I refrained from costuming ourselves this year (husband put his flipflopped foot down), I did of course dress up the babes. Very important being as they are, after all, fledgling Americans. Target for the boy and Janie and Jack for the girl. (A discrepancy I know, but I can’t bring myself to spend real money on clothing toddler boys who DESTROY all they wear in ever-so-active play!)
Anyways, here we are….!
